Recovering from addiction is a deeply personal journey that requires a well-thought-out treatment plan tailored to the individual’s unique needs. As a consultant psychiatrist (a medical doctor specialized in mental health), I understand how crucial it is to have a plan that encourages not just recovery but long-term growth and wellness.

This article was inspired by a video I watched recently off Youtube on rehabilitation centres in Eastleigh, Nairobi. The video highlighted mistreatment and blatant abuse of “patients”. This inspired me to write this blog on the ten essential signs I use to ensure a successful addiction treatment plan designed to guide you or your loved one toward a healthier, addiction-free life.

1. Clearly Defined Goals

A successful treatment plan starts with specific, measurable, and achievable goals. Whether it’s reducing substance use, managing triggers, or achieving complete sobriety, clearly defined objectives help track progress and provide motivation.

2. Customized for Individual Needs

I am aware that no two individuals are the same, and neither are their recovery journeys. The best treatment plans are personalized, addressing factors like the type of addiction, mental health conditions, personal history, and recovery goals.

3. Active Participation by the Individual

We have to work together, nanii!

Recovery works best when the individual is actively involved in their treatment. This includes contributing to the plan’s design, committing to therapy sessions, and taking responsibility for their recovery.

4. Strong Support System

My successful treatment plans emphasize the importance of a reliable support network. This therefore has to include family members, close friends, support groups, or peers who provide encouragement and accountability.

5. Ongoing Monitoring and Flexibility

Dear family members, please note that addiction recovery isn’t linear, it is not straight forward! A strong plan should include regular check-ins and adjustments to ensure it evolves as the individual progresses. This flexibility ensures the plan remains relevant and effective.

6. Addressing Underlying Issues

Many people struggling with addiction also face underlying issues like trauma, anxiety, or depression. Effective treatment plans include therapies like Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) or trauma-informed care to address these root causes. This is why I will always emphasize a comprehensive psychiatric assessment before a person is sent to a rehabilitation facility. Without thoroughly and aggressively addressing underlying conditions the outcome is unlikely to be desirable! Skipping this step could be the difference between a good and bad outcome.

7. Building Coping Skills

Relapse prevention is a key component of recovery. A good plan helps individuals develop practical coping strategies to manage stress, avoid triggers, and maintain emotional stability.

8. Holistic Recovery Approach

The current research in the treatment of mental health conditions is adapting a bio-psycho-socio-spiritual approach. Therefore, a successful addiction treatment plan must consider the whole person—body, mind, and spirit. This might include incorporating physical fitness programs, nutritional counselling, mindfulness practices, or creative outlets like art therapy.

9. Evidence-Based Treatment Methods

Not tooting my own horn – which is a healthy thing to do by the way…once in a while– using evidence based treatment methods is what sets me apart as a psychiatrist in Kenya (obviously thanks to my mentors Dr. N/ Dr. F) . Evidence-based approaches like Motivational Interviewing (MI), Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT), or group therapy ensures the highest chance of long-term success.

10. Commitment to Long-Term Recovery

Recovery doesn’t end after rehab. The best plans include aftercare services (this is very important!) like follow-up counselling, alumni programs, or ongoing group therapy to support individuals as they transition to everyday life.
